Imagine being a member of the women's team and being informed you'll be staying in Qatar of all places for multiple weeks since that's where the WC is being held...stay safe

The women's world cup won't be in Qatar. But there are many women staff for the men's teams who will need to go there.

I refuse to even fly through that whole area despite most flights being through there. I can't imagine having to be there for however long the WC is for. Especially given there's a significant amount of LGBTQ players.

I watched my first World Cup in 1990, and every one of them since then.

Not going to watch it this time though. I’d rather wait 4 more years. Whatever happens this year doesn’t even count as far as I’m concerned—even if my team wins.

Then why do u ever watch it don’t u know fifa and Inturn all fa are corrupt.. they do what they think is good for their pocket .. u all are just pawns and money source for them

Not sure why I’m bothering to respond to someone who uses “u” instead of “you”, but here goes:

This is the first time—that I know of—where slave labor was used to build the stadiums, etc. I don’t really give a shit about the petty corruptness, but I draw the line when human rights issues come into play.

Well you went to russia last world cup when russia were bombing syrians lol.

2

ItchyAcnestis t1_isjlqsb wrote

As a US citizen, I could never judge another country for choosing to bomb a poorer nation. I’m not a hypocrite.

3

darkmatter8879 t1_isjpd9i wrote

If you truly care about human rights how about you criticize your own government while boycotting all other nations that don't respect human rights,

Syrian human rights activists were telling the world to boycott the world cup in Russia but no one listened, even thought the crimes Russia did in syria is not even comparable to whatever Qatar is doing,

Any crime the USA do, you will turn a blind eye on to not be a hypocrite ?! What kind of logic is that ?!

That's exactly what a hypocrite is,

being hypocrite is when you selectively choose when the world should care or not, like they are doing now

So stop acting like you care about human's right, until you stand up for all human's rights.

ItchyAcnestis t1_isk6x6d wrote

Don’t mistake caring with passing judgement. I fucking hate my country’s policies, but other than practicing my 1st amendment rights, I am powerless to effect any real change.

1

darkmatter8879 t1_iskd3ag wrote

You are not powerless like I said

  • You can criticize your government and express your feeling about USA policies even if it did not have effect you live in a democratic country, and if you can't even do this then fuck democracy,

  • You could have boycotted russia like you are doing with Qatar,

I don't believe people are boycotting Qatar are doing this because human's rights, because they would have done the same to Russia, it's all politics, western media have been going hard on Qatar as a pressure because of the OPEC+ decision.

Yes, the air is absolutely cleaner up here.

Also, I can’t make people stay in my life or do what I want them to do—I’m not Qatar.

Thanks to illegal streams, I can watch this joke of a World Cup with a little less guilt.

Skurnaboo t1_isgm717 wrote

Why is this surprising, Qatar isn't exactly known for free press.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 91%. (I'm a bot)

> International television crews in Qatar for the Fifa World Cup will be banned from interviewing people in their own homes as part of sweeping reporting restrictions that could have a "Severe chilling effect" on media coverage.

> The restrictions are within a list of conditions that outlets must agree to when applying for a filming permit from the Qatari authorities to "Capture photography and videography of the most popular locations around the country".

> The BBC, which will be offering "extensive coveragemedia", did not say if it had agreed to or challenged the film permit rules, which are detailed in the official World Cup media portal.

Article makes it sound like they can't film at a lot of locations but can still maintain their domestic journalistic standards...so I'd imagine they'll just do pieces on the human rights side with talking heads instead (as opposed to say Brazil 2014 where they were showing footage of protests and out on the streets interviewing etc)
