Look, the Tories get years to raid the public purse and strip workers rights, but every so often they have to pull their finger out and con the public into giving them more years to rape and pillage the country, because gulling them into voluntarily choosing to keep the boot on their neck makes them less likely to object to it. So even if the next election is an eternity or two away it still helps to keep tabs on voters and their little feelings.
