Only vaguely related but check this out: The other day at work I was in a meeting with a colleague when I received a text. I didn’t check the phone yet but kept talking. A minute later the phone chimed again reminding me that I hadn’t checked the message yet. When I checked the screen I saw that it was from my immediate supervisor so I unlocked the phone to check the message and saw that there was a ton of text in the text box as though I had typed a long message (maybe 100 words). It was a (poor) transcript of the conversation I was having with my colleague.

Never said “Siri” or anything like it. Fucking phone just about sent a transcript of a conversation with a colleague to my boss.

We'd be hearing about this constantly if it was a thing that actually happens.

Shrug. Your belief is not a requirement for the truth. This happened to me on Friday, though. I’m kicking myself for hurriedly deleting instead of taking a screenshot first.

I agree, though. If it happened to me I’d imagine it has or will happen to others and that it would be a significant story. It’s positively alarming.

Yeah that’s all on you. Some people like Siri….some people don’t. Turn it off on your iPhone. It has nothing to do with the privacy article.

I can see I’m the asshole.
Siri will transcribe your voice if you let it…it has happened to me. The result is a text is put in draft mode….then you turn it off. Dafuq that have to do with the article?

So did you try putting it in airplane mode and talking to Siri? What happens?

Yeah I get that I can turn off Siri for added protection, but how is it not a privacy issue? My phone transcribed a conversation-unbidden-and appears to have been prepared to text that transcript to someone in my contacts list. It wasn’t Siri, because as I mentioned I never initiated that program. Seems like a huge privacy issue to me.

Well… because it is said up front that Siri is consuming your audio to produce a response. It seems really obvious that if you explicitly give a cloud personal information, it know it’s you. If Siri was running in the background sending all of your audio, your iPhone battery would die in 1hr.

So, Siri has a switch to listen to collect the data.

Fwiw, I hate Siri, I’m a iOS developer . I have a good friend that works at Apple working on Siri. I don’t use Siri and I’m very aware of what Apple collects.

It might not be sending your audio, but to work it does have to constantly listen for that trigger. It doesn't always get it right either. My work phone is a iPhone and Siri triggers all the time.

I drive alot for work and have to setup routes in maps. Just with the radio on I can see Siri triggering and listening multiple times a day. It's weird because it's often a phrase not even close to "hey Siri".
