Any state institution that allows unauthorised installation of software on their computers should have a long hard look at themselves. Lock that shit down before the next ransomware hit or data breach.

Guys, a smart phone is a computer device. This ban covers computer devices, meaning you are not allowed to install it on a computer OR a smartphone.

Wait so they’re protecting me from the App that china developed by banning it from the phone I use that china developed?
Got it. Okay.
matts1 t1_j0nxvcx wrote
SLIGHTLY different.. The app is china owned.. but your phone is just china built.
trow_away999 t1_j0pe5tv wrote
Ah. See it’s good to know that China would never use this incredible piece of information wielding/gathering technology that is my iPhone- which they built- to spy on me.
Very courteous that they would wait over a decade and use an app to spy on me- And only then be completely thwarted by an app ban.

Oh don't get me wrong.. I think tiktok doesn't collect anything unique. Tons of apps collect the same data but its big bad China that's collecting it. soo.

Its a ban on all computer devices. A smart phone is a computer device. Are you guys really this dumb or can you just not read?
LiberalFartsMajor t1_j0m53up wrote

Why is this news? Isn't banning of all kinds of social apps from work computer a standard practice?
matdragon t1_j0lx1zx wrote
it is not, you can get on FB/YouTube/insta/etc from any govt computer with internet capability
Illustrious-Plate-17 t1_j0mxdsh wrote
Depends on IT department rules

Any organisation that has any kind of IT department would have all social networks blocked by default. If not, that IT depatment sucks big time.
BossCrabMeat t1_j0nkn3v wrote
Not really, no. Lots of the training videos I had to watch was on YouTube.
Is reddit social media? I had more questions answered here about computers and PowerShell.
My kids'school has a Facebook page, any important message like school closures due to snow, buses running late etc gets posted first.
Any work place banning me not to be able to access those is losing me as a potential employee.
12358132134 t1_j0psxf5 wrote
You are missing the point. Those who require access to social media (eg. marketing people) for their job, they have access to social media. Others don't. There is no reason for Jane from accounting to be able to access her Facebook or Instagram while on the job.
At least, that is how it should be in any decent company that has IT deparment. That is literaly the first thing every IT manager does.

Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz is the second owner of Twitter and he has access to every politicians DMs but nobody in Congress says we should ban Twitter......

Sounds reasonable, it is a government device after all.

Doesn't Windows 11 give you a TikTok icon when you first log in to a new machine? it's not the full app, but if you click on it doesn't it install the app in the background?

There are computers that run TikTok? Also no doubt already banned by IT policies but need to pretend to be busy
matts1 t1_j0nxo96 wrote
Yes it has a website.
StandStillLaddie t1_j0jz72j wrote
Wow. I guess if you can't be controlled and don't give money to politicians, you get banned.
phredbull t1_j0k06f1 wrote
I can't imagine why Tik-Tok should be installed on any kind of work computer.
But I also can't imagine having a job where I'm camped in front of a computer all day, just fucking off & pretending to be doing work whenever a manager is within viewing distance.
