We already knew the concept was based on a film script by Ian Brennan, which was darker and edgier than what the show became.

The first half of season 1 is very dark. One of the lead characters thinks about running over a little lady everytime he gets an erection. Thats super fucked up.

Glee was such a wasted opportunity. It started out poking fun at that type of teen drama and then ended up becoming the thing it made fun of but dialled up to 11.
