A lot of people were disappointed with the timeskip, even George R R Martin hated it and said it was rushed.

Not only that, but I find the idea of George not appreciating the qualities of a time skip really weird, considering he is probably wishing he had gone with the original plan of time skipping asoiaf to Daenerys arriving in Westeros, back when he could.
Then again, television and book writing are two completely different things.
