Fun fact, pirate eye patches weren't to cover open eye sockets (though I'm sure that was a decent secondary use)

Eye patches were commonly used by sailors to keep one eye adjusted to dark vision above deck, so when they went below deck they woudn't have to wait for night vision.

you can also get the same effect by keeping one eye closed until you're back in the dark, eyepatches were more practical back then tho since they went on deck so often

Its not one eye, it's one hemisphere (i.e left or right field of vision) of both eyes and they're flipped.

It reminded me of "Commisurotomy, Consciousness, and Unity of Mind" by Charles Marks Fascinating book on the impact this surgery would have on people's sense of identity (i.e., your brain was occupied by two senses of identity for a short period of time.)

I was born with "corpus callosum agenesia", meaning that while I got it, it never developed, per my meurologist, IIRC, and all I got was partial epilepsy. I suspect that some of my "everyman-tool handling" skills, complete inability to do complex math, (I despise both maths and doing handywork, so that may explain a bit...),and unstoppable daydreaming might have to do with it, but.. I'm no PhD.

Hey mine is permanently under developed! I’ve struggled with impulse decision making & math is a doozy. Also I’m 4 standard deviations away from the norm for fine-motor skills in my left hand 😂

In cases of severe epilepsy when medication doesn't help they will often sever the corpus callosum to help prevent seizure activity.

Now read about what happens to unborn baby boys as soon as they get there first testosterone bath in the womb. Their body temperature raises to about 108° which cooks that corpus callosum, inhibiting cross hemisphere communication. Early studies of the difference of the hemispheres was done by men and they recognize that women had something in their thought processes that men didn't, so they assumed women functioned out of the right side of their brains (creative, artsy, emotional) and men functioned out of the left side of their brains (order, logic, more stoic). The truth is, the men doing the studying just focused on the difference. When women got into the science they realized that they functioned in both sides of their brains while men were stuck pretty much on one side. The science of the testosterone bath came next.
