TIL that Yeager wasn't catching at the time of the mishap, he was on deck! I was in 5th grade when this happened, and it was the talk of the schoolyard, but I didn't see it.
So my question is this: how would a throat guard on a catcher's mask have protected him if he was on deck?

To protect him in the future from errant foul balls while he’s catching.

So, it wouldn't.

If it could happen to you on deck, it could definitely happen to the two people right behind you when you’re batting. But I agree, the implementation of this rule has some holes in it.

Holy shit. I have never heard of this before. Can you imagine being a kid enjoying your first baseball game and seeing a guy spurting blood out of his neck on a fluke?

A lot of safety equipment wasn't mandated in sports leagues until it was too late. Batting helmets were actually one of the last bits of required equipment in the majors. I believe as recently as the 60s, there were still some players who didn't wear them because they were grandfathered in.

The only photos seem to lack detail. If you don't want to see something similar in another sport you could look up Clint Malarchuck or Richard Zednik, two hockey players that had their throats cut on TV.
