In Vermont they only live in the boreal forests of the Northeast Kingdom and high mountain summits.

This. As a hiker I've run into them on the trail. They linger at mountain summits where people stop for snacks. The birds will often snatch trail mix or your sandwich whether you offer it to them or not, they're bold and are colloquially known as camp robbers. Like blue jays, they stash food under tree bark for eating later.
