As with most farmers doing anything at scale, he's likely been living off of the USDA teat for years while hating the government.

I think that government subsidies for farmers are OK, but the reality is that most of them hate the government that makes their businesses economically viable (all of the large Cabot Co-Op farmers are government dependents), most want to end benefits for everyone else, and other such conservative hypocrisy and cruelty. I have three tenant farmers on lands that I manage (one is a big Cabot guy) and they all are as described above.
