I'll be staying in Hardwick, VT with my girlfriend in January. Does anyone have any recommendations for scenic spots to pop the question?

I think there's some covered bridges that are either haunted or romantic I've forgotten.

There’s one on rte 15 in next door Wolcott. Good suggestion. Solid photo op.

Fisher Covered Bridge:

Not sure construction will be done until February there

Are you talking about the construction near E Elmore Rd in Wolcott?

No at the covered bridge they are still doing work and don’t plan to finish that section of trail and I believe the bridge until almost feb.

But one can stand with the bridge as background for a photo, right? (That’s all I was suggesting.). Just not hike the trail?

Fisher Bridge is a few miles east of Hardwick on 15, part of the old St. J & LC RR, and if I remember correctly the only railroad covered bridge left.

If you're up for an hour hike/snowshoe, then the top of Mt pisgah (by lake Willoughby) is the roof of Vermont, you can see forever and ever. It's my favorite place in vt. Would be totally worth it - put in a good hike, earn the view, and get the girl. Happy to give more details if you're interested.

Be sure to swing by the blackbird bistro or Parker pie to celebrate after!

Bald Mountain is right by Pisgah and has a fire tower on top so the views are even better

True, but it ain't got cliffs, and pisgah's are fantastic.

Honestly just the view from the south beach alone is stunning enough.

Cabot plains is pretty spectacular, almost 360 view, covered bridge, and never busy unless at sunset

This is the only possible answer. Look up AM Foster Covered Bridge on Google maps and images.

Nichols Ledge is a very short and easy hike. If you and your car will be equipped for some snow. Just be sure to approach from the south unless you want to do some bumpy off roading before you pop the question.

That area can be steep and slippery. Might be unsafe in winter for those unfamiliar.

This is true. Depends on their experience level and inclination for adventure. A lot of paved road lakes are better for an easy photo setup and a hassle-free day. But if OP is up for it this is certainly a breathtaking proposal spot that will probably be empty.

Came here to say all of this. Nichols Ledge is the most spectacular spot around. DO NOT APPROACH FROM THE NORTH it’s a snowmobile trail at that time of year. The parking lot for Nichols is where the plow turns around.

My friend has a sick backyard skatepark in Hardwick you can get someone to air over you while you’re on your knee haha

Do you Nordic ski at all? Or have any interest in giving it a shot?

Yes, that's what we'll be doing! Planning on going to the Craftsbury Center

joeconn4 t1_j0vrivu wrote

At Craftsbury, I think the most beautiful place is the top of Elinor's Hill. It's an incredible view of to the east! On their trail map, it's where the 29 circle is: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5cf93199c24c0a000107ec5b/t/601dd5f354d35170cf2e06f7/1612568051698/2021-01-11-SKI-COCZoom_10.5x17.pdf.

Thanks for the suggestion! We will have dogs with us, so I think we're limited to Fox Run and Cabin Trail

joeconn4 t1_j0w04i7 wrote

You are correct. Little Hosmer Pond and Great Hosmer Pond, those trails allow leashed dogs too. I haven't skied the trails on the northwest side of Lost Nation Rd in forever, so no recommendations.

Propose along one of their trails. Perfect.

Consider getting someone to discreetly follow to capture a photo of your special moment and/or someone to go ahead and carve a heart with your initials in the snow.

Maybe celebrate the next day at Edson Hill. Dinner if price is no object and you can snag reservations, if on a budget, go for drinks and apps at their bar.

For your lodging, maybe bring her favorite love songs playlist, some rose petals, and lots of candles. Bubble bath if there is a tub.

Thanks for the suggesting! This might make the most sense since we're planning on XC skiing

Edson Hill is a little fancy for us, we're salt of the earth, cozy, take our dogs everywhere with us type people

Got it. Was thinking of maybe making it memorable but it sounds like you’ve got the perfect plan that is more personal. I like it.

What aboutStephen Hunick’s Dog Chapel. I’ve never been there but I’m sure the dogs will like it.

Pull treats out of your pocket for the pups, give them to her to feed them (and to distract her) then pull out the ring and propose when she is finished with the dog treats. Treats all around!

Not sure how accessible they will be during that period of time but Nichols ledge or Barr Hill

Lake Willoughby isn’t too far. Might be cold but is always beautiful. Or take her for dinner at Simon Pierce and pop it there? If you are ok with doing it in a restaurant.

3

Unique-Public-8594 t1_j0uz7ln wrote

Simon Pearce seems too busy/touristy for a romantic moment though. Not excited about a proposal in a restaurant. Icky.

Willoughby is about an hour’s drive from Hardwick but is pretty. In winter the lake might remind you of a lake or an open field, if frozen. I don’t remember any dining there.

SilverKelpie t1_j0whgby wrote

There is The Gap by Willoughby for food. They always have a few nice weekly specials that they detail on their Facebook page.

The landfill in Coventry is lovely this time of year. If you get there at just the right time of day the steam from the snow on the decaying garbage creates an other-worldly photo opportunity.

The hardwick house of pizza is the best restaurant in town, they have bud light on draft, you could put the ring in a nice pint of Bud Latte.

If you want to drive all the way up to Newport, there's Shattuck's Hill, faces Lake Memphremagog, there's a place to park and everything.

Loudergood t1_j0ws9kk wrote

Not what I would call a proposal spot but check out the Museum of Everyday life and Bread and Puppet while you're there
