Some of us practice sobriety! š I say some because I know DC loves to drink lol.

DC ranks as one of the healthiest/most active cities in the U.S. Tons of options from volunteering, cycling, sports leagues, museums, board games clubs, and more.
I drink, but I don't go out anymore. There are a ton of things to do outside of the bar scene.

yeah, I think my experience will be different now compared to what it was in my mid-late 20s.

There are booze free bars and many places offer mock tails, so even if your friends are boozy you can still have a good time and get fancy drinks without getting sloppy!

nice, yeah looking forward to being able to go out and see more places offering na beers

Itās honestly so much more than that! Even completely alcohol free craft cocktail bars.

That place has been āopening soonā for almost 3 years now. I hope they actually do open soon but I donāt have high hopes that they survive. I went to a nice NA cocktail bar in Berlin a few years ago and was sad to see that itās since closed.
I really hope Iām wrong though.

You'll be fine. While DC enjoys drinking there are tons of sober events and options for folks who aren't about that life. I don't really enjoy heavy drinking (a glass of wine with dinner max) and I've honestly never felt left out or limited.

I think itās about finding groups of people that share similar interests or activities. For me, itās run clubs, music meetups/open mics, and photography clubs. That being said, weāre lucky to be in a time where people respect boundaries. Iāve never been pressured to drink, even if Iām at a bar or social event. Most places have mock-tails now too, which make those kinds of places feel less awkward to me.
Iām having a great time in DC and Iām sure you will too!

Where do you find music meetups?
churchofnobody t1_iy9ro3z wrote
Iāll admit for me itās more word-of-mouth. Jamminā with friends Iāve made at open mics mostly. Gives me the idea to start a meetup group though.

the Washington Sober Meet Up group is active and fun! I've since moved out of the area but I met a lot of sober pals through that.

Donāt worry, plenty of places have nice drinks that arenāt alcoholic you wonāt be excommunicated for being sober

For all that DC likes to drink, people are generally cool if you decline. A couple of friends donāt drink for religious reasons and theyāll sometimes order mocktails or sodas when weāre out but weāve never had a waiter or bartender say something and Iāve never seen anyone pressure anyone to get one. In my experience itās not a place where everyone drinks each round of drinks at the same pace, and no one cares if you donāt want to drink.
