Employment drug screening for the ADL?

Hey y'all, I'm a medical marijuana patient who uses tinctures and edibles to treat chronic pain caused by my time in the military. For context, I have nerve damage in my back and neck as well as some screwed up muscles in my face which the edibles/tinctures help relax and really allow me to sleep.

Recently, I applied to a position at the Anti-Defamation League and I am currently going through the interview process.

I've been abstaining from cannabis products out of caution that the ADL does pre-employment drug screening, but I'm honestly in a lot of pain without it. I spent Christmas Eve and Day chugging Ibuprofen and just gritting my teeth, and my sleep has been pretty affected. Additionally, the nerve damage causes my face and mouth to spasm, which is just not fun.

So, I'm wondering if anyone knows if I'm overthinking this. The ADL seems like they wouldn't waste their time on marijuana urinalysis, but I would hate to lose the position over something so simple.

What's really frustrating is that there is no information on the internet or their website either way, so I'm stuck in the dark.

I was wondering if anyone here maybe had some insight?

Pretty unusual to drug test in the nonprofit advocacy sector.

Yeah I agree. I don’t have any info on the ADL specifically but I’ve never heard of nonprofit drug testing unless it’s like a hardcore conservative anti-drug org.

Maybe I’m reading your post wrong but I think you’re saying you don’t know if they drug test, and are wondering if anyone knows? I don’t, but see some other commenters assuming they do and I don’t think that’s your point, is it?

Why not give them a call and ask them directly? You wouldn't have to give them any personal information.

I've called a few times, but their main phone seems to be mainly for donations and reporting incidents. Plus, it seems like their general info line has been closed due to the holidays, and I haven't been able to get on the line with a real person.

I can’t imagine a nonprofit advocacy group can afford to drug test and also possibly lose out on otherwise qualified applicants

I highly doubt it. I just got a DC government job without a drug screening. Besides, can’t drug screens be explained via an official doctor’s letter?

Depends on the type of drug screen. Federally regulated drug tests (like for DOTcard holders) will not accept medical marijuana as a legitimate use, because it is illegal on a federal level.

I would look for a job somewhere else. This retrograde and invasive policy is a red flag for how they might approach HR more broadly.

Sorry, I think you misread the question. I don't know if they drug test and was wondering if someone knew if they did or not.

Ok, I did misread it. Unless ADL has squirrely government contracts and this job is for that, I don't think you need to worry about it.

You could just ask them about it, too. In the long run it's better for your own wellbeing to be upfront about who you are and your health needs from the start.
