I just saw them headed down 17th. I think they’re escorting a small group of protesters.

Yup, just passed protestors closing down 17th and P intersection.

No more than 20 or so protestors. Cops seemed to outnumber them 3 or 4 to 1. Massive bike cop presence and I saw many more on the way as I walked further up 17th.

Anyone know their plans??

The cops generally ask the protesters where they want to go and then work to close streets along that route.

Oh yeah they were doing the most lol. Screaming at drivers and blocking the bike lane. Then the protests finally showed up and it was like 20 of them escorted by at least 80 cops lol

Why do the police intimidate marchers like that? It’s the issue excess police presence in communities that caused this in the first place?

The police work with and protect the protesters. They also ensure no crimes are being committed by or against the group. The leaders of the protest tell the police what their route will be, so a large police presence is used to block traffic and streets so the protesters can safely walk their route. In the case of counter protesters showing up to start issues, the police are there to keep the groups separated. In reference to the police outnumbering the protesters, it’s hard to tell how big the protest may become. It’ll start with the main group/organizers, and as they walk through DC it’s not unusual to gather more protesters in a snowball effect.

No one in DC is going to hard marchers. Their presence makes it feel like we live in a police state and prevent us from feeling free. The violent hand of the state always present ready to pounce. Expecting the worst from people.

People who think this also characterize the police escorting Richard Spencer as a loving gesture of white supremacy.

Broken brains… it sucks to see

LilInterweb t1_j6b1v5o wrote

Well that’s different because DC is blue. We would harass white supremists. They don’t have a place in our community. Peaceful marchers responding to a brutal murder to show respect and solidarity with the family and to demand reform, this community supports. I’m starting to think the people of this sub Reddit are either fake liberals or closeted republicans/librarians.
