Weird that most of the comments are about how to deal with panhandlers, etc. um, there’s a lot more to city life than that. First of all, it really matters where you live…what kind of lifestyle do you want? Quiet, suburban style? Hardcore urban? Something in the Middle? You should try to pick the right spot to live…. Also, there is SO MUCH to do, you need to really budget your time and $$$, but most important you need to really explore and research to find out what’s out there. Depending on your work/study situation & personality, it can be either really easy—or really hard—to make friends, especially good friends. DC is a great place for riding a bike and walking around, so definitely check it out.

Dunno about the article, but in the last month or so while out walking the dog in the morning I’ve personally walked by 4-5 businesses with smashed in front doors, glass still all over the sidewalk. Can’t say that it makes me feel “unsafe,” but it does piss me off. Many of them have been businesses that i frequent, and at some point they’ll just say “eff this” and not re-open. Small businesses in this area have enough challenges these days without worrying about constant break-ins.

I wouldn’t call you stupid, just unlucky. I’ve had my scooter for almost five years and have locked it up all over town—often for hours—without any problem. The only sketch i’ve encountered was once i had it locked up outside a fast food joint and someone came in and asked who owned the scooter locked outside? I said it was mine, at which point he said he had an “extra” one just like mine, and would sell it to me cheap. I passed, but mine was still there later…

To everyone complaining about RCN increasing their rates: keep track of what verizon and other providers are offering in your area (i get frequent fliers) and call RCN to threaten to switch if they don’t roll back your increase. I’m still paying the intro rate i got when i signed up four years ago. this year verizon had a really good offer and i was tempted to dump RCN anyway even after they rolled back the increase, but i got lazy and decided to keep them for one more year.

My house was built in 1908 and when i bought it in 2000 it had an oil furnace (and huge oil tank) that looked like it might have been original. If not original, it was very, very old.
