so, what incentive does Russia have to not go scorched earth and burn all of Europe?

Any attempt to burn Europe would be not only the end of Russia as a potential threat, but the end of Russia in every way shape or form. That's a pretty clear incentive.

sounds like no real difference to the above quote. They may as well make sure to ensure their enemies don't live long enough to gloat or claim victory over Russia.

There's a huge difference between having a future where you dont have an army but your kids grow up and have a school to go to and an alternative where nothing can live on the soil of your cities for the next thousand years.
Like I said, the incentive is there. If you can't see the difference, then that's down to you.

so, Russia would be defenseless at the mercy of the West / former Soviet bloc...
I would rather make sure that

also applies to my enemies while I still can.

russia can only blame themselves. Noone forced them to attack Ukraine. They aren't fightning NATO in Ukraine either as their claim.

You shouldnt be downvoted for voicing a valid point. From the russian point of view, I mean people expect rational behavior from tyrants and crackpots like Putin, who thinks his alexander the great?
Yeah 20 years ago id have said no way would they be so stupid as to provoke the west into all out war.
Today I say, anythings possible.

They could be a prosperous country with larger economy, more trade, higher standard of living, higher life expectancy, more freedoms, stronger presence internationally. They already have a strong background in culture, sciences, tech, etc. and huge income from natural resources. That seems like a good incentive. It would greatly benefit the vast majority of people anyway. Maybe it wouldn’t benefit… Putin?

Russia to become a "ward lords" country but with nuclear power... "Leaders" of such countries are going in war with whoever then can (Putin:rebuilding old USSR), preferably attacking smaller foreign power ofc. Europe is too big and has at least 1 active nuclear power.
