Reply to comment by New-Statistician-686 in Sweden's foreign minister says NATO talks with Turkey progressing well by IndependentTHNKR
So what are they supposed to do then, if they want to enter NATO?

Just chill and wait. Sweden would be a valuable addition for Nato. Let the other members put pressure on Turkey. There's no panic for Sweden to join. Erdogan is probable just holding out for large enough of a pay day. His economy is failing with 85% inflation. To compromise on your democratic principles with egomaniac autocrats is just losing game. They will just come with more demands.

Sweden applied to NATO because of the threats from Russia, so the "no panic to join" argument doesn't apply.

Sweden and Finland both already have independent defense agreements with the US and UK so it wouldn’t trigger all of NATO but most of it

Do you really see Russia invading anyone else soon with the mess they got in Ukraine?

You don't want to start accession talks once Russia is ready to invade, you want to do so now.

Well, they have started accession talks, and 29/30 nato members will let them in.
Sweden applied to join relatively early in the war before they really could see how much Russia fucked up and misjudged Ukraine. To seriously invade another nation, Russia needs to finish the war in Ukraine and rebuild their armed forces over a decade or so.
Turkeys demand are unreasonable, and Sweden can't in all seriousness just accept them.

Sweden could also simply just shuffle their feet, say yes and once they’re in they just slowly “forget” about the agreement.

That's true, but turkey will probably demand for it to happen before the vote to join nato? Not sure how the timings line up. Couldn't Sweden just say they won't do anything any other nato member wouldn't do? Turkey would not be able to play these games with another member.
