Your definition of ripped is different than mine. Looks like he's in great shape, that's for sure tho. Similar to Spartacus(1960 film), everybody was in great shape but nobody was ripped.

Yep. Just a byproduct of their time. Transport any classic old time star to modern times, they'll be ripped. And the reverse applies too, like Hugh Jackman wouldn't be ripped if he was a old time film star.
