Your brain. It's wild, and it doesn't function the same as other people's brains. It doesn't always even function the same in exactly the same circumstances. Now add a substance that makes it fire off even more randomly with hallucinations and watch it try to cope. Brains are so complicated that we haven't even figured out how they work normally without any drugs altering their function. Figure that one out, and maybe one day we'll figure out the bad trip.

Wait, what? Why is human blood being considered for anything other than being used for human blood? Vampire jokes aside.
Recycling gone wrong.

Reply to LPT: Feel like you still smell after taking a shower? Try occasionally using an antibacterial soap by [deleted]
Antibacterial soaps are ineffective. You'd need to leave it on your skin for upwards of 8-10 hours for the antibacterial ingredients to have an impact on the bacterial level. Pretty sure you don't want to take a shower for that long, not to mention the skin irritation that would come from leaving it in direct contact with your skin for a prolonged period of time.
Your armpits still a bit smelly after a good soap/rinse? Use a little shampoo for a second go-around. Also helps to manage episodes of swamp-ass. Or try a bodywash. But don't buy that antibacterial garbage. It's a waste of money, a health risk at causing bacterial resistances, and potentially harmful to the environment.

Reply to ELI5: Is "non toxic" the same as "food grade". Was just wondering as I caught my kid munching on play-doh in his room. by elevatorbeat
Food grade means it can be safely consumed.
Non toxic means you don't have to call poison control, but it isn't necessarily recommended for safe consumption. 99,999 times out of 100,000 your kid will be fine, but depending on what surfaces that play-doh sat on it could be contaminated with a pathogen that might cause an upset stomach/vomiting/diarrhea. So like any other day of your kid putting random stuff in his mouth, basically.

There aren't any because at this point AI is not existent. We're not even close to achieving that. Chatbots are not self-aware, they are not sentient constructs. They are not even close to being considered life. While we may not be able to dissect self-modifying code to understand why it responds to stimuli in unexpected ways, that does not make for a sentience. Just no.
I do appreciate that this is something that may happen at some point in the future, and is something we should take seriously. But ChatGPT? Yeah, the author probably wrote this article using it.

I'm only surprised this doesn't happen often enough for that subreddit to blow up simply from people dying trying to take selfies.

I appreciate this for the nottheonion aspect, but fuck RTE for a *slightly* misleading clickbait headline.

If you don't leave a message then I'm going to assume you didn't think the call was important enough. Or you're a robot.

Reply to Why do poultry producers kill their stock when they get bird flu, rather than keeping survivors to reproduce? by poorbill
The risk of it spreading is too high, resulting in massive deaths of birds across broad regions, possibly worldwide, instead of trying to keep it localized and damage to a minimum.
It's similar to how we treat cancer. We kill all the cells in the local region around the the tumors to keep it spreading. This is harmful to the healthy tissue, but if the cancer spreads then there's little point.

Reply to comment by brownlawn in ELI5: why gas fireplaces have long orange flames while gas stoves have very short blue flames. by brownlawn
A blue flame means the fuel (gas) is combusting fully - complete. Incomplete means not all the gas is being consumed in the reaction with the excess being released into the atmosphere.

Orange flames in a gas burning device can indicate improper fuel-oxygen mixture as it's not combusting properly. This can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Call your utility/gas provider/maintenance personnel and get it checked for the problem!
Wood-burning fireplaces have orange flames because of the sodium present in wood, btw!
