We ARE correcting the issue. For years, Native women have gone missing and nobody gave a shit.

That was one of the main criticisms I heard online about the Gabbi Petito case - like yeah, we should be solving missing person cases, but where was this level of attention and outrage over the thousands of black and indigenous women who have gone missing in the US and Canada over the past few decades?

If you read the article, it says...

>"The Senate Bill, signed into law by Colorado Gov. Jared Polis on July 1, 2022, acknowledged the unique challenges that stem from these cases, which includes poor and inconsistent reporting, lack of interagency cooperation, and misclassification of racial identity. Part of the bill required the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to operate a missing Indigenous person alert program."

Oh, and the related headlines below the article demonstrate why this is extremely necessary...

  • Family of murdered Indigenous woman believes her death could have been prevented

  • National response for Petito was appropriate, but should apply to Indigenous people too, Colorado advocates say

  • 'We’re going to follow everything': Alamosa County mother remains vigilant in search for her daughter missing since 2019

  • Indigenous communities investing in keeping their languages alive

  • Report: More than 700 Indigenous people reported missing in Wyoming over past decade

  • Indigenous, Native American tribes are pushing for voting rights

Yep. Paris Hilton isn't some dumb bimbo - that was a VERY carefully manufactured image she used to escape her controlling family. They had a lot of money and very good lawyers, and she knew they could send her back to the abuse ranch at any time, so she cozied up to paparazzis, tabloids, and D-list celebrities. She fabricated an entire lifestyle as a socialite to make sure she had a camera on her at all times so that if she disappeared, it would make national news.

Edit: Also, these so-called "treatment centers" are often used to target gay kids or those who try to leave oppressive religions. They should be re-branded as conversion centers.

Jordan Turpin.

Yeah, the cops treated it as a "runaway" situation and were fully prepared to return her to her parents, despite her saying they'd tried to kill her before, and would absolutely do it again. The only reason they entered the home at all was because of those pictures. When they went inside, they found a dozen emaciated kids, some of whom were chained to their beds and hadn't bathed for a year.

It's considered one of the worst child abuse cases in America's history, and the cops almost didn't investigate.

Thankfully Jordan seems to be doing great now. She has an active TikTok account and keeps in touch with her siblings.

It's rarely that clear-cut, especially if you're basing your opinion on a headline.

Take Andrea Yates, the woman who became famous for drowning all 5 of her children. This case is unique because female family annihilators are virtually unheard of.

Sounds awful, right?

But then you learn the details. Andrea Yates was severely mentally ill. Like diagnosed schizophrenic, hearing voices, multiple suicide attempts, etc. She was on medication, and her doctor advised her not to have more children, as her post-partum psychosis was terrible and getting worse with each one. But then her husband, a devout Christian, convinced her to go off her meds and have another child. A few weeks after that appointment, she was pregnant with baby number five.

After the baby was born, her husband left her alone with all the kids one day and went to work, despite her doctor telling them, again, not to do this under any circumstances. In the twenty minutes interval while she was unsupervised, she drowned the children. She claimed to have been hearing voices, and was convinced God wanted them back in heaven.

Her husband is arguably the guiltier party here, and he displayed basically no remorse. After Andrea was forcibly committed to a mental institution, he got married again and had even more kids.

So yeah, snap judgments are bad.
