Yea, my company used to do this year round. It was a horrific and toxic environment. It didn’t last long at all.

But, announcing layoffs and asking managers to rank everyone is a different animal. Performance based cost cutting seems to make the most sense and ranking everyone worst to best is the way to do that.

It sucks any time a company does layoffs, but it’s much better as a one off exercise than as a yearly practice, that’s for sure.

I’m not really suggesting raising a family downtown Portland, the idea was the surrounding suburbs. I also wouldn’t suggest raising a family in downtown Seattle, but OP is clearly talking about surrounding suburbs when he’s talking about the metro area.

Edit: Bonus, if you live in Vancouver, you can take advantage of no income tax and then pop into Oregon to take advantage of no sales tax. Plus you miss the Portland traffic on your monthly drive to Seattle.

Don’t sleep on Portland, you’re about 3 hours from Seattle there and it’s a much smaller city if you’re into that. The news will tell you that it’s scary there, it’s not. The surrounding suburbs are awesome with great outdoors activities and considerably cheaper than Seattle.

By all means, Seattle is a great place. But if you’re shooting for 3 hours away, you’ve got a whole nother city you can consider.
