It’s totally fine if you don’t like the joke.
So in answer to your question it could be because the fellow scientists with imaginations like to see the possible applications and consequences of an idea in the real world. Maybe the interesting ones can see or maybe even enjoy a joke while imaging how the subtext could point to possible benefits or problems with the tech?
Either way condescension and gatekeeping aren’t great ways of fostering an environment for the free flow of ideas from all types of people.
