Ah yes the Chinese government that has carried out forcible abortions in the past. The government definitely respects "life" over there.
Funny thing is, the American version of "freedom" he is talking about does translate well in some ways to the Chinese government. It is why Chinese prison administrators come to the US to learn from the likes Sheriff Joe Arpaio. This dark side of "freedom" to ignore people's right to be protected for who they are has always been here in America.

Reply to comment by MechTheDane in TIL a German scientist named Alfred Wegener was ridiculed in 1912 for advancing the idea that the continents were adrift. He was mostly an astronomer and meteorologist though. He was literally just a dude who noticed all the continents fit together like jigsaw pieces. That's literally all he had but he was right.

The problem is that there is a lot of evidence that justice reform efforts being explored today do work in many ways, and are generally evidence based, but only go so far in a society that has trended towards becoming more economically and socially unequal.
It has generally been established that more unequal societies have more crime, and that much of the correlation comes from conspicuous consumption in an unequal environment. Altogether it is not surprising that many parts of the United States are currently on a path towards increasing crime rates.
