I bought it and the first Malazan book. I'm excited to delve into the deep end!

No, I'd like the complete opposite of that. Veiled sociopolitical commentary is the last thing I want. Give me philosophy, something that resonates deeply. I don't want escape, but I sort of view politics as an escape also. Better a book that makes you confront yourself.

Aw, really?
Welp, guess I'm reading The Count of Monte Cristo or something then.

A philosophical approach to storytelling is halfway to selling me already.

I am a sucker for good prose. Any suggestions?

The annoying thing is that I do enjoy a lot of the books. And I feel invested in the story. But maybe an extended break. The Licanius trilogy has peaked my interest.

That's it! It definitively feels like YA. Hell, you have a character that describes everything related to the magic system as "awesome", and when she uses magic, she's simply releasing her awesomeness.

I sort of enjoyed the discovery phase of the magic system, but now that it's established I do feel that it's lost some of it's... magic.
And there too you'll get the same description from every character every time they draw in stormlight.

I did start that book a couple of days ago actually! But several people have described the trilogy as "Sanderson Lite", with the same issues in the writing style. Is that accurate at all?
