I’d be happy to go back to the days where we could build similarly to how many downtowns already exist. Many towns are zoned in such a way that if a building burns down it can’t be rebuilt it the same form, even though it’d stood for a hundred years because the zoning has changed.

Instead we’re forcing people to live in the 1950s-70s and claiming it’s to preserve the Vermont of the 1900s

This seems like a great way to do nothing while looking like you’re doing something. It’s technically more difficult to amend our constitution than to impeach an official, & several of these sheriffs should be impeached and removed from office. But, no one actually wants to do something like actually remove them.

Our system favors the status quo.

We have a ton of prime real estate that is sitting vacant, like the old Boves, the YMCA, the gas station on Pearl, the transmission shop on North Winooski, the Koffee Kup building and more. It’s clearly better for these owners to use it as a tax write off than to sell or redevelop, and there’s zero political motivation to disincentivize this on any side of the spectrum.

state funding is less than 5% of the budget compared to nearly 25% for states like Florida. There’s a clear and obvious reason tuition is high, but sure, pretend like there’s some magical way to get blood from a stone.

except you've turned $80k into nearly $200k simply by purchasing at the right time. I suspect you won't be homeless with your six figure windfall. $1,800/year in increased taxes on an $80k+ profit seems like...not very much?

I know it's theoretical value until you sell, except you have that value in equity.

you can thank our lawmakers and fellow citizens who've kept Vermont 50th for state support for higher education--even if half of Vermont students attend for free, tuition is prohibitively expensive for the rest due to our nearly non-existent state support. It's essentially a private school with a nominal state affiliation.

snow tires are also great in just plain cold weather—they’re made from a softer rubber compound that is designed to perform when it’s cold, unlike normal tires which harden and often suffer performance decreases in the cold.
