You DON’T know the total size or even what will happen to the staircase in the future. It’s like this staircase is in a pitch black room and you have a preconceived idea of how big the staircase is but it’s based on a very biased, irrational, impossible to calculate set of assumptions and so the staircase could be super short or it could be even longer than you anticipate.
