some stories would totally have a flashback to like 2 or 3 years ago, or even just before the start of the story. There's not a law that says flashbacks have to be at least 20 years in the past

They're Teslas. It's like trying to differentiate a dentist's waiting room from a dermatologist's waiting room. That said, yeah you'd still have to be pretty out of it not to notice.
