Compared to the rest of the NYC area, I'd say so comparatively. But, that's not saying much considering there's still a concerning amount of crime here, but I'd say overall it's so-so.
If you're a woman walking along at night, I'd say it's not safe. You're always at risk in general walking anywhere at night, but the NYC area does have a reputation for robberies and muggings happening at night.
My wife and I personally never had any trouble with anyone living here other than seeing some people brawl with each other and a few people getting cuffed for what appears to have been nothing too over the top. That's all anecdotal though, so I'd recommend looking at the stats in the area you plan on living in.
The biggest crime here is the average rent that will have people thinking you live in a luxury apartment if you tell them how much you're paying. I paid far less and got far more when I lived in the North Side of downtown Philadelphia.
