I agree. Zeneli is maybe a little better than Dallas-based Cane Rosso but not somewhere to take people from out of town when we’re in New Haven. I’ve had Neapolitan pizza everywhere, including in Italy. But the New Haven char is the specialty here. Wait in line at the New Haven Big Three like Texans wait in line for top Texas barbecue. It’s worth it.

Is there anywhere to get good Mexican or Tex-Mex in the area? Everything I’ve tried has been total garbage or $30+

If you want New Haven and not a neighboring town:
East Rock
Westville
Wooster Square

I'm new to the area, so I don't have any idea on trends, but Modern has never been better than the top three on my list. It seems strange to me given how many people have it as their top choice

I like Zeneli, but it reminds me of a Dallas-based chain that makes Neapolitan-style pizzas, Cane Rosso. While they're quite good, I wouldn't consider either Cane Rosso or Zeneli to be better than the main New Haven places
