You will have much better options if you don't need to be within walking distance. There are neighborhoods that are quite affordable near the school, but they may or may not be in your comfort zone. I'm not familiar with the public bus service to Southern but that might open some doors. It's worth noting that all city buses have a bike rack on the frontier, so you can bike that last mile when the weather is amenable.

Congratulations to Paul and a huge thanks for turning it over to someone who plans to keep it rocking.

"In an interview Thursday, Patrick Meyer promised repeatedly that he and his partners plan to continue, not upscale or water down, Cafe 9 as patrons currently recognize it.

The name stays. The same kind of music stays, including all booked shows.

“We’re going to keep it weird. We’re going to keep it local,” Meyer promised. “It’s not going to become a gastropub.” "

New Haven is significantly safer now than it was back in the 80s. Those were rough times. Downtown had nothing but a dying shopping mall. None of these fancy restaurants and night clubs. No fancy Apple store in Broadway. Significantly higher crime rates.

Surprised to see that opinion by a "pizza snob".I've eaten there plenty since my kids seem to like the ambiance. Respectable pizza. Out in any Midwestern suburb it would be far and above the best pizza for hundreds of miles. But around here, it's probably like #20 on my list. Behind Mangia, Olde World, Odie's, Eli's, Ernie's, Zuppardi's, Dayton St, even Da Legna.

I take virtual piano lessons with a guy in LA and I love it. I can record the lessons and refer back at any time (including adding time stamps, comments, etc.). There are some downsides related to small audio delays - you can't play together, teacher can't count a beat while the other plays, etc. - but we work around that pretty easily. I don't have to leave my home and it's much easier to schedule when you don't have to figure in travel time. Or take a shower.

I really like All Things Musical. Especially if you like jazz, George is one of the best around.

Check out Mark at "Solution Studios" on Whitney Ave in Hamden. He has a plan where you pay by the month and then you can pick the classes you want to attend. It's all group classes but he walks around and you get individual attention while also playing with others. A lot of my neighbors go and love it.

Pantry has plenty more to offer. The lox scramble and spinache feta omelette are fantastic. Shakshushka is one of my all time favorite breakfast dishes, though it is only occasionally on the specials. Cinnamon pancakes are good but not worth a special trip, IMHO.

YMMV. We had a terrible experience with middle school, and so far an excellent experience in HS. Lots of clubs and activities. The HECA program is amazing. Support staff is on point. There are also magnet school options if your kid has a special interest.

Spring Glen in Hamden is great. 10 minutes from downtown, right on a bus line, great elementary school, and a very walkable neighborhood. Your kids can walk to school and stop at their friend's house on the way home.
