What possible reason could I have to be mad? I’m never in Oakland anymore, and there’s plenty of adequate Mexican food around.

For you to be able to consolidate the worst occupational experience of your life into a 24-hour experience at Oakland Mad Mex, I was really hoping there was some juicy stuff behind it. Alas, my hopes were misplaced.

Oh u/CowboyNealCassady, how you scratch me where I itch! I used to sing the praises of the BLS, but they fucked me in 2006-2007, again in 2010 (resulting in a loss of eight years of wages, though admittedly my case is probably unique/ rare in a unicorn-ish way), and yet again their forecasts from 2017-2018 are yet again proving to be grotesquely, double-digit percentage-points off and I’m just waiting for the inevitable offshoring for a career field with a 26% growth forecast through mid-decade just four years ago. BLS statisticians are either evil, or incompetent, but they all need some serious Lord of the Flies federal severance packages.

Wal-Mart in North Versailles ceased 24-hour operations after a shooting- corporate in Bentonville added two additional Western Pennsylvania stores to that close at 11 PM/ reopen at 6 AM list for appearances.

Giant Eagle in New Kensington was I think the first to cease 24-hour operations- again, customer and employee safety were the drivers there.

COVID was just an excuse to institutionalize a common sense business response to an increasingly dangerous population, especially those who don’t have jobs and can wreak havoc in Wal-Marts and grocery stores all night. It won’t be coming back anytime this decade.

Out of state, but I’m very proud to admit that my paternal grandfather got into a fistfight at Hardee’s (aka Carl’s Jr.) with one of his coffee and breakfast sandwich buddies, who was a retired cop, a little over ten years ago. They both were about 80 at the time, and I understand that whatever the subject they fought about, it was pretty stupid.

My uncles were pretty upset about Gramps getting 86d from Hardee’s for the day. We grandkids had no such hang-ups.

Yeah, I kept repeating myself back to people:

“I’m on a hiking trail.”

“I’m not on state hunting grounds.”

“It’s not hunting season.”

And location after location after location people have been like:

“Don’t take any small kids.”

“Go in a huge group!”

And I’m like: “Did you hear what I said above?”

And eventually it dawned on me that I was the one who didn’t get it.

Pennsylvania is the only state that I have lived in (that includes Texas and multiple southern states) where I was warned about hiking due to a danger from hunters both in and out of season.

Nowhere else that I have lived has anyone ever even thought- let alone verbalized- that hunters present a danger to humans in the woods, especially in non-hunting-authorized areas. Something to think about.

Can confirm Listeria is NOT affected by refrigeration in the least. While I don’t subscribe to the notion that a non-young child/ non-immunocompromised person should blanket-avoid raw milk, the threat in things like deli meat and hot dogs too is real.

Want to see how the smart folks in Food Science use viruses to actually combat the Listeria bacterium?

Now go pour yourselves a nice glass of raw milk!

Driving out of Selinsgrove we passed something that closely resembles this along with some other buildings and I immediately told my 8 yo how important it was that we made good time back as this was Selinsgrove’s notorious Werewolf Region.

She immediately called BS, but then kept looking around and started in with “Dad, you’re making up that, right? There’s no werewolves, right?”

Just treated two (three, if you count an infant) native Yinzers to an over-and-back roundtrip on that beast last month- the CBBT never fails to blow people’s minds, even those of us who were scampering around in the sands underneath since as far back as we can remember.
