Can attest: 60-y-o Cherokee, long haired clan. First brush of this was on Reddit about a year ago. Mebe ‘cause I was raised cracker, but this the sort of pithy nonsense my aunts and uncles woulda tossed out there along with "Neither a borrower nor a lender be. . ." and "take yer hat off at dinner."

Getting to that place where, "this sucks" plus, "I need help," and doing the reaching out and committing to doing some other guy’s idead—that’s the hard part. The rest is just follow through. You have a bunch of folks who really want you to succeed. Grab onto somebody living the life they want, do what they suggest, if only for a bit. My sponsor has offered to refund my misery if I’d like. AA has worked for a lot of us.

It’s only been the past decade that my mother, (89-y-o,) has identified—there was tons of shame. All the generation immediately prior to hers were sent to boarding schools to get the Cherokee sanded off. Passing became pretty important.

King’s Pet Sematary. When I got about 6 pages from the ending I read it over a trash can because I never wanted anybody subjected to such crap. Loved the Stand, the Shining, and Green Mile was literature. Also one of only 3 movies I’ve walked out on. Pointless malevolence.
