Such a cool & thoughtful gift idea, OP!

I have a pair of Grenson boots. Resoleable, absolutely gorgeous, and good fit. Not inexpensive at all, but if the the leather holds up, the re-soleable bottom means I can keep them going for a long long time.

I like the “Fred” G2 fit. Just a tiny bit over your current budget. Sometimes these pop up on sale on their website.

As a teacher in a career-and-tech magnet school, I have seen firsthand how a) practical and diverse “career and vocational education” can be, and b) how much it can motivate kids to come to school, be focused and willing to learn, and c) how it encourages teachers to be pragmatic with career-track students.

In our English department, we might still borrow from a college-prep curricula, but we definitely are conscious of how ee might infuse workplace writing experiences for students in, say, our auto or our plumbing program (business writing, invoices, letters!)…. I really think more schools could benefit from more career and tech program choices

Just had a chat with an otherwise enlightened, smart, respectable county resident who refuses to go into the city… she thinks she’ll end up a squeegee victim or get robbed and tossed in the harbor, or run over by a dirt bike…. Her reaction was just VISCERAL and the opposite of a reasoned response. So the city/county divide is 100% real, at very least on the county side.
