They should not be fired, they should be offered new positions and retraining within the MTA. Protect their salaries too so they don’t lose anything, but make them do something productive. It is absurd that the union is protecting literal do-nothing jobs.

7.7 Billion divided by 2.75 is 2.8 billion rides, and that’s without accounting for the operating costs, maintenance, and debt servicing. This will never pay for itself at these prices.

You can only remove so many lanes - cars and trucks still need to get between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Giving one lane to bikes was a great decision but there is marginal benefit to adding even more space down below (and the marginal cost to car traffic would be substantial). It would be better to widen the existing pedestrian path on the upper level, though I’m not positive what that would look like or how much it would cost.
