They made a self contained love story within the confines of a fungal world calamity and made you love the 2 characters and mourn their losses all within 30 minutes of introducing you to them in the first place.

That’s pretty much as good as writing, direction, acting and pacing can get.

I certainly won’t say it’s ‘one of the best tv episodes ever’ but it was brilliant.

It would absolutely work and has done. Only problem is practical effects usually cost more and take much more hours/manpower.

A quite recent ish example though just bc it comes to mind was the Dark Crystal Netflix reboot series which did very well a few years ago. However that had a lot of money behind it

Severance is absolutely superb imo tbh so I would say that it is, however I was intrigued and involved fully by the end of episode 1 so don’t really understand ‘does the show pick up’ as I didn’t find it slow or in engaging early on anyway.
