Reply to comment by travelinmatt76 in ELI5 Why is there a a crawl space under houses? by PetertheRabbit321
Subterranean termites living in the soil will have instant access to the wood in your home.
Also the soil can get damp from rain/poor drainage and cause mold and mildew problems.
A slab adds a physical barrier to prevent this but it is very difficult to modify or repair anything built into the slab. For example the drain pipe.
The crawl space acts as an air barrier and allows for easier access to plumbing or HVAC systems. It also takes less concrete since you only pour in the perimeter of the house for the foundation.

Reply to ELI5: Why was Chinese culture so influential throughout all of East Asia particularly Japan and Korea? by astarisaslave
It's easy to spread culture when you have a lot of people. But those people all need to be fed. China has one of the most fertile farming regions in the world. Many of the rivers from the Himalayan mountains deliver nutrients east through China, providing great farmlands. It's why China currently has the world's largest population. On the other side of the Himalayas, India enjoys the same benefits which is why it has the second largest population.
The other East Asian nations simply could not produce as much food. Korea is on a mountainous peninsula in the colder north. Japan is an island nation. Southeast Asia is a tropical jungle.
Korea and Southeast Asia "embraced" Chinese culture when threatened with China's large military. Japan took elements of Chinese culture through exchange and trade but it didn't stop China from trying to invade.

My company made record profits this year!
People who help fund my company now expect us to make similar profits next year.
But it looks like we probably won't because it's harder to make money.
So let's cut costs like labor (layoffs) so those savings go into our next year's profits!
"But what about the year after?"

There are two situations:
If the game is almost developed or already released, the developers can get support from a publisher to aid in marketing and distribution. It's uncommon for a development team to have any marketing talent so it's best left for the experts at the publisher. Distribution also means help in porting the game to different platforms like mobile and console with a separate development team. An example of this is Stardew Valley that had great success on PC but needed publisher help for porting to other platforms.
The second situation is where the publisher helps fund the game development. You can take a bank loan to fund your own game but you will be on the hook to pay off that loan. If the game doesn't do well, you might end up homeless and poor. Publishers take on that risk when funding developers. If the game does poorly, at least the developers were paid for making the game. In return, the publishers have some control over the development process for good or for worse. The developer also has access to the publisher resources like in-house game engines, knowledge/talent, and QA teams during development.

Your saliva (spit) provides a protective layer in your mouth to prevent bacteria from growing on the surface.
However, when you sleep at night, you produce less saliva so you don't drool or choke on your spit. Less saliva means the bacteria can spread over the surfaces of your mouth. The foul smell of morning breath is the waste emitted by the bacteria as they snack on any food remaining in your mouth.
If you leave your mouth open or breathe through your mouth at night, your mouth dries out faster and allows the bacteria to spread quicker.
Brushing your teeth and tongue helps get rid of the bacteria producing the foul smells.

Reply to ELI5: Why is burning wood (local, natural) considered bad for the environment, yet naturally occurring forest fires considered good for climate stabilization? by prendrefeu
Both are bad for humans in terms of the smoke generated.
For the forest environment, many forests rely on naturally occurring forest fires as part of its normal life cycle. Some trees and plants only have their seeds erupt when exposed to fire or the aftermath of fires. Fire helps clear out the underbrush regularly while older trees survive with little damage.
However, once humans start living near forests, they don't want them to catch on fire. Fires are stopped before they can clean out the forest. They also start diverting all the water elsewhere and cut down the old large trees for their own usage.
Now we have dry conditions and an overgrowth of underbrush due to a lack of fires. This makes any forest fire much larger and hotter, able to burn even the largest trees that typically survive fires.

Reply to ELI5: Why are off-road capable vehicles so often “Boxy?” by [deleted]
The box shape provides more interior room to hold things, especially if you're spending many days outdoors. The roof is flat so you can put more things on top. Lastly, the shape helps prevent the vehicle from rolling onto the roof like an upside down turtle.
There are downsides however. A box is not aerodynamic so the mileage is poor. At high speeds, the air hitting the box is loud. Mileage is getting regulated by countries for new cars. Comfort is what people are interested in for a daily driving car.
