Reply to comment by Sufficient-Green-763 in ELI5 Why is there a a crawl space under houses? by PetertheRabbit321
Why don't you want the floor on soil? I've lived in plenty of houses with no crawl space with slab on grade.

Sometimes the water table is too high to have a basement. I live just south of Houston Texas, if you dig more than 2 feet deep the hole fills up with water overnight. Any basement here would fill up with water.

Mythbusters were going to film an episode on the security flaws of RGID chips in credit cards, but every major credit card company said they would pull their ads off the Discovery Channel if the episode aired.

Well the first step is to verify power is off, then check with a meter or detector, then the final step is to use the back of the hand.

Reply to comment by NameUnavail in ELI5: how did we standardize on watts/amps/volts when everything else is segmented across the world (km/miles, nm/ft-lb etc)? by t0r3n0
We do use metric, we learn metric in school and metric is exclusively used in science fields and engineering. There are countries besides the U.S. that use both metric and imperial. The U.S. uses U.S. Customary instead of imperial, and we use metric.

Automatics don't have a clutch, they have a fluid coupler, torque converter. Think of it like 2 fans facing each other. The fan attached to the engine is always spinning and blowing on the second fan which makes it spin. Since there is no direct connection you can hold the brake and stop one of the fans.
These old Army Corp film reels are great for learning about mechanical systems. Here's a film about torque converters. https://youtu.be/leCEmJA0WsI

Because planets are too small. James Webb is looking at crazy huge things. It's like trying to look at a grain of sand 50 miles away with binoculars.

One of my most favorite liminal spaces I've ever been in was on old empty clothing store. It had that darker beige carpeting and mirrored columns. It had no echo because of the carpet. It just felt strange to be in such a large space with no echo.

Yellow lights don't repel insects, less insects are attracted to or respond to yellow lights.

Is this true though? Both white and brown eggs are equally available at the grocery store. The only difference seems to be that white eggs are cheaper.
