I think this climate of independence is a legacy of Europe's geopolitical decline over the past 75 years. You went from controlling the whole globe (save North America) to small continental nation-states. European nations can no longer compete with the great powers - The US, India, China, Russia, etc. Quite frankly, you are the least geopolitically significant global region today. You're best off picking a side.

This chart is incredibly flawed. As someone mentioned, security arrangements vary in scope or scale - the Rio Treaty is defunct, and countries can be allies irrespective of formal security arrangements. For example, it strains belief to imagine that the US would treat an invasion of Austria or Ireland the same way it would treat one in the DRC or Sudan. Pakistan may b a 'Major Non-NATO Ally', but it's closer to China these days than the US.

There are 100 senators for a country of 330 million. The Upper House of Congress is more prestigious than the lower one.

In fact, unless you plan to run for President or are selected as VP on a ticket, a Senator is the highest political office one can hold in the US government.
