I used to live in Las Vegas. Most of the kids who went to college went to UNLV (4 yr) or the College of Southern Nevada (2 yr) or both.

Most of the kids were happy to stay where they grew up and went to college and it's got lots of jobs in the areas the colleges focus on (the colleges specialize in fields that have high local demand). It's really, really not surprising.

Yale imports students. Some stay, but they don't really have close ties to the area in the first place and the job market isn't especially enticing.

Nigella seeds and berbere mix come up in a lot of the recipes, but there are probably others I'll want to try out.

You're making the rather wild assumption that the train would be going top speed the entire way. Between theexpense of acquiring a sufficiently straight route (280 miles seems to run over Long Island Sound, not around it, and through multiple densely inhabited areas), the ridiculousness of non-stop between DC and someplace as small as New Haven, and the likelihood that they'd have to slow down simply to reduce noise pollution if they didn't go far out of their way to avoid human habitation, there's exactly zero chance of a 90 minute train from DC to New Haven.

Fun to imagine, though.

If he's open to hedging his bets, you might be able to persuade him to put a significant fraction of the money into one or more banks. Use the argument that if there's a fire or robbery, he'd only risk the money on hand, and if whatever he's afraid of regarding banks happens, he'd only lose the bit in one bank at a time.

Obviously an imperfect solution, but it'd be an improvement over what he's doing now.

As for the fireproof safe or bag, do some research to find out what parts of a house tend to be safest from fire. It's usually going to be in the basement or on a slab, and away kitchens, fireplaces, and garages where fires often start. It's possible that a fireproof safe heats up so much that paper inside it ignites even when the safe itself remains intact.
