To me that seemed like the opposite. That it was so based on Sandler and previous Sandler roles that the character was almost Adam Sandler playing himself (Jewish New Yorker, sports fan, unlucky but still charming, has the manchild type personality and petulance of usual Sandler characters, etc).

This is the most accurate answer here. More people know these guys than the folks from Pan Labyrinth, District 9, Book of Henry, etc

Me and my wife bought a ticket for The Gentlemen as my wife is a huge Matthew McCounaghey fan. We both left when he was killed off before the opening credits. Really awful ruined our date night
