For those recommending The Venues or Brentwood, those are awesome churches, but there is no way OP’s parents will be up for that. And OP may not even feel comfortable there themselves. My suggestion, as a mom who used to be conservative Christian, it was very important to me to find a church that helped my kids spiritually and where they felt like they could make friends. If you talk to them honestly, outside of the situation, maybe at dinner one night, and just tell them the things that make it hard for you and what type of church you might like better and that might help you grow, I have a feeling they’d be open to listening. How long have you guys been going there? That might also play into their decision. Either way, if my child were telling me they were really unhappy at a church, I would be open to trying somewhere else bc it was so important to me to find a place that was a good fit for all of us. Hugs to you!

Ignore. When we were considering moving here, I posted on a local FB page asking for opinions about the area and got not only a crazy amount of comments but even DMs telling me not to move here. It was so weird! Thankfully, the positive voices won out. We love it here. (And we aren’t even conservative.)

My family and I moved here from KY. We looked at Nixa and Ozark (both have great school systems as well as Republic and Willard) but settled on south Springfield. From a teaching standpoint, I think it really varies school to school, but I am really impressed with the SPS superintendent and we have been very happy with the schools as parents. (I have kids from elementary to high school.) When looking for housing, I would recommend south Springfield or northeast if you’re staying in town. But a lot of people also really like living in the middle of town — the University Heights and Rountree subdivisions.

There are a lot of great restaurants— you can do a search on this subreddit and find some great recommendations. Greek Belly is one of our favorites. You’ll also hear people recommend Cafe Cusco but it took me 4 tries before I found something I liked there (the pork tacos, fYI). :)

Does anyone know the legality of this now that we know all the details? Does the landowner have the right to burn the belongings of other people if it’s on their property? (I don’t believe it’s morally right — I’m just curious as to whether there can be legal action.)

I feel like this is a lesson (a tragic one) on intent and impact. I believe Patrick had the best intentions in setting up the fundraiser. He is a good man who has shown that he loves his community and cares about spreading kindness. But he messed up. Big time. And he’s acknowledged that. BUT I feel like his explanations have been to try and explain his intentions instead of just acknowledging the impact it had on the family. Whether or not he meant to exploit them, that is how it impacted them, and all of this would have gone better if he had just acknowledged the hurt he caused instead of trying to explain that he had pure intentions. I understand wanting to clear your name, but I think at this point, that would have been the better statement to make. I think that Patrick has learned from this, but I do really feel for the family. I hope that he does get a chance to talk with the family and apologize.
