Please ask yourself if the risk is worth the reward. 100+ gallons of water catastrophically failing at a property you don’t own is a completely different kind of situation compared to a pallet furniture collapse. If I were a landlord, I’d consider that kind of thing a lease-ending proposition. Speaking of leases, check yours before you do anything.

I just spent months decluttering our family home (2 adults 6 kids) for a long-distance move. IMHO you shouldn’t saddle your kids with boxes of sentimental junk that accumulate over the years. Put that money in a bank account or something. Or write a letter and seal it up for them to read many years later.

Ultrasonic humidifiers are filthy and eventually crap our. I average 3-4 years out of them. Best to buy one that integrates with your furnace and I would not recommend the evaporative ones that blow air against a water panel (most Honeywell are like this.) I’m talking about one with a small boiler than injects steam into the ducts when the furnace is running. The one I have is Aprilaire brand in the US.

My kids learned this song in kindergarten, sung to the tune of Darling Clementine, and spent many hours teaching it to me:

Evaporation
Condensation
Precipitation
Collection…
(repeat until Dad screams)

So I am gonna have to disagree with you there lol!

I have a 2500 sq ft finished basement that’s mostly below grade but a walk-out. I needed a dedicated HVAC zone if for no other reason than to dehumidify that much space in the summertime.

GE Appliances including Monogram (the supposedly top of the line models where a fridge can cost $10-20K) isn’t even owned by General Electric any longer. They’ve been owned by Haier—the Chinese conglomerate most famous for shitty dorm fridges—for over 5 years.

They used COVID as an excuse During COVID they took the opportunity to stop stocking spare parts for a lot of models that might have been BIFL. I learned this earlier this year when I needed a $50 part to fix a $2000 Monogram built-in microwave but there wasn’t a single one to be found in all of North America, even on eBay. They were happy to offer me a 10% discount on the $3000 model that replaced it, though.

Ironically, the part I needed was a piece of glass that broke when I accidentally smashed into it with the metal handle of my BIFL Miele canister vacuum during a vigorous cleaning session.

In 30 years I’ve gotten 9 years at most out of a dehumidifier. I think something like 90% of them are now made by Midea (massive Chinese appliance manufacturer) so they are pretty similar in terms of build quality. I would buy on price alone at this point. Newer ones are definitely quieter than models from the 80s and 90s but take those noise ratings with a big grain of salt.
