Wow. Having a whole article of bad planning decisions just listed like that was.... I couldn't make it through. Too depressing.

We really can't blame this one on cow paths, either.

Nope, you're fine!

Consider posting on NextDoor & a local Facebook group as well. Those tend to be more targeted to location, and have the type of people who spend all day peering out their windows... not always useful traits, but finding lost pets is absolutely their strength.

Some bail funds literally don't factor in the crime. The theory is that bail is immoral; the type of crime it's for doesn't matter. If the person shouldn't be on the streets, they shouldn't be allowed bail to be on the streets.

Obviously, a lot of judges are currently using bail for exactly this, to keep people off the streets, which is exactly what the bail funds are protesting, and I get why that's bad, but.... it does lead to exactly this.

Others consider it case by case, usually because they don't want to do something like pay someone's bail only to have them commit another violent crime.

Statistically, way less likely than finding it laying around their own house.

I do think it's more plausible than the Lock Picking Lawyer safe-breaking wunderkind ideas being discussed above though.

I mean, I'm sure most responsible people toss their guns in the Charles after they're done with them for exactly this reason, so a kid doesn't pick one up on their way to school, but you can't count on everyone to be responsible.

The mechanic I use is a one-man shop, and generally works on European imports. I could easy see him refusing to take my Honda if he had to pay a few thousand a year just to work on Hondas.

Yeah, I'd be happy with that.
