Apple’s hardware design team — I guess they were holding a grudge from giving in on an inverted-T for the arrows instead of full-height left and right (which looks better, but is harder to use in practice).

They probably should have made all three keys ⅔U, or made Backslash the 1U key rather than this abomination!

I think that even though the screen got larger, the decrease in bezel size meant that the overall width available for the keyboard was smaller.

No it’s real! This layout is used on the keyboards for the 11″ and smaller iPads.

Averak — a very average layout with HM/FY/OIU mods.
This picture is a bit old, and I now use a layout that it closer to Colemak, but it still has some Averak influences.
