I've had a LARGE dog run towards me in absolute fury in the past. I saw my life flash before my eyes. He jumped the fence and bolted toward me and a friend.

I yelled, waved my arms, and the dog backed off.

I no longer walk around Shelton without carrying my Glock.

This is the #1 danger in Shelton. Not the tweakers.

I am a little familiar with Shelton, for better or for worse.

Quiet, quaint, and people are slightly nicer than in larger cities/towns.

Shelton, in my opinion is a dying town that is being kept alive by the few thousand Guatemalans that have arrived to the area in the last decade or so.

I see more sketch folks loitering these days than I did a decade ago..

My neighbor knocked on my door. Introduced himself. We had a 5 minute chat. Now we're friendly and neighborly. No weird awkwardness.

Way better than seeing neighbors and being awkward and pretend not to see them.

You go ahead and do your thing. Most of your neighbors will appreciate you. And the rest, well, they can just as easily be themselves, and that's fine too.

Socially hostile is the most interesting and yet the the most fitting term I have heard so far to describe W. Washington people.

Emotional island is also correct.

One thing I will add, and this could be a plus or a minus, is that recent reports have WA state adults (adults only) among the highest in the nation for "illicit drug use", and lowest when it comes to substance abuse treatment.

A LOT of people are using... for various reasons.
