Neither am I! Especially after seeing it.

I think the most recent kids movie I've seen where the PG was warranted was Guillermo Del Torro's 'Pinocchio'. I mean, yikes! Before that though, I agree that it is basically a joke.

Not sure if they're considered bad by anyone offline, but Hellboy (2004) has a 6.8/10 on IMDB, and the sequel 'Hellboy 2: The Golden Army' (2008) has a 7/10.

I loved both of these films, completely unironically. I wish they would have made a third one instead of the reboot from 2019. Hated that one.

The sequel is awful (Larry the Cable Guy instead of Schwarzenneger). Maybe that's what they meant?

I recenty saw one where it was his dead father who loved Christmas. Massive plot twist!

Not sure if they would be too old for this, but pretty much any 'Winnie the Pooh' movie. I watched all of them when I was younger, and still go back to them sometimes for comfort when I'm having a bad day because they're so light. No major conflict, peril, or even villains. Just stuffed animals doing their own thing.

There was also a Peanuts movie that came out recently (2015) that might work. Nothing too scary in that one, it's just a long Peanuts cartoon.

And, no one dies in it. Concerned that this is outside the norm in a kids movie, but here we are.

Not sure how to hide a spoiler, so I'll be as vague as possible. Early in the movie, there is a storm in which someone is killed. It is not at all graphic and is essential to the story, and is not focused on much after the short scene where it happens (3 minutes max.). It may just be me being paranoid, but I would recommend watching that scene first to see what I mean. If that kind of thing bothers them, you may be able to skip it.

You should watch the first one, but just because of the spectacle of it, if you're into that sort of thing. The effects are amazing, way better than a lot of movies that have come out in recent years (looking at you 'Cats'). The plot is pretty lame, the same thing we've all seen a dozen times in Saturday morning cartoons alone (Smoggies, The Raccoons, Captain Planet, etc.). For anyone who will argue, "The Company" as it's referred to in the movie, is after is called 'Unobtainium'(to me, absolute comic gold, but certainly not the filmmakers' intent). What I do is turn it on, shut my brain off, and just stare at the screen and let my magpie brain look at the pretty pictures.
