It's doubly stupid because the DC Metro (where this photo was taken) was designed for automated operation, but the entire system has been driven manually since 2009. Why? A bad 2009 train collision was thought to have been caused by the train control system. Federal investigators later determined the problem was with bad equipment, not the control system, but they've kept the automation disabled anyways.

DC and Boston were neck in neck, but I think DC is on the upswing now with a competent GM and recent big wins like the Dulles extension. Unfortunately, Boston is now entering its "Red Line on fire" phase
