Musk is taking a leaf out of the playbook used by American auto-makers in the early days to scuttle the inner city tramlines.
Once gullible city officials buy into it and scrap their original plans to improve public transportation, he will then disappear into the sunset.

I think it depends on how far deindustrialisation has occurred in your locale.
I live in a locale (Singapore) where this is true - most traditional engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical) folks I know don't work in their fields anymore - they actually work in finance, software engineering.
But then we are unique - a small tiny island.
