Hey y’all, this is prolly my first post in a long time I barely use this account but, what towns in ct can I find relatively affordable rent ballpark 600-1000 a month in a safe area? What resources can I use to find affordable housing programs?
Reasonable rentals are hard to find these days .
I don't think you can rent an apartment for $600 anywhere in America.
I rented my last apartment for $650. My brother rented his place last year for $500 in Georgia.

I live in the panhandle of florida. If you want a rent that cheap, you are living in a village of 500, no where near civilization. Side note: they don't refer to them as villages here but to give CT people an idea of the kind of area I'm referring to.
I actually own two apartment buildings in Highland Park, Birmingham, Alabama. The rents are definitely not $600 in my 1960s buildings. Are you using Craigslist for your survey or something marginally legit like Costar?
But whatever. There is a national housing shortage. Maybe you should buy some of those properties?

I have an apartment currently in Eastern TN thats a 1 br for 500, lease just renewed. Its a gift from the heavens.
West Texas you definitely could it's cheaper cost of living out there outside Lubbock the college town but also, nothing out there lol!
Maybe, but I really doubt it. I went to the University of Chicago in the late 1990s. My rent for a 1-bedroom back then in the ghetto (not right by campus) was $550.
I actually work in commercial real estate and own property. There may very well be apartments that cheap in areas where there are no jobs, but then there are no jobs.
You can get a 2 bedroom for under $650 in SC.

This is run by Costar, so it's pretty reliable for apartment rents. There are two properties listed, and they appear to be age/income restricted.
The median rent is definitely well above $1,000 per month, perhaps more.

But yeah, SC is stupid cheap but it’s a fucking horrible place to live.
Not $600, but my last apartment was $860 and included all utilities 1 bedroom. This was in central PA. It also had a bug problem in the summer, the occasional mouse, gun shots and people arguing at random hours, parking was also a pita. But $860 all utilities included. This was last year. Not sure if they raised the rent though.
Not true! Paid $550 for a studio apt in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Yeah I don't think this exists at all in CT. You could get on the Section 8 waiting list but it might be up to a year or more depending on the town.
I’m on Asylum street in Hartford. I got my 1BR at $955 and it went up to $1100 this year for 1 year lease and $1225 for at will. I know that’s a bit above your range though
Yea, I just got a nice raise at work so I’m putting plans in motion to move out, most I can afford is 800 a month commuting no more than 20 miles to my job in hamden

Call 211 infoline and ask about all social programs that may apply to you such as snap, fuel assistance, medicaid, childcare (if applicable) and housing leads. You may have to balance your budget arpund against some other assistance.
211 is a 247, 365 hotline run by the United Way in every state and Canada. You are auto routed to the nearest office to you.

Affordable rent in CT... rents were high 15 years ago...
I found a reasonable place by checking out the neighborhood I wanted to live in, then going to town hall and asking the lady at the counter to connect me with landlords who had bought multi-family houses in town. I don't know if you can still do that, but my girl and I found a downstairs on a split-family for damn cheap. Try it.
Good advice. To add on, OP might want to check out convenience stores and other small business, places with bulletin boards, bars/restaurants etc. and ask around. Small local weekly “newspapers”‘might have listings too (like The Yankee Flyer or Foothills Trader in Torrington area). A lot of older landlords aren’t necessarily on Craigslist or Facebook, they still rent the old fashioned way, by word of mouth etc.

A one-bedroom apartment in the Willimantic area goes for $800-1000. I've lived in the town for years and have always felt physically safe although I've had my bike stolen a couple of times. Not a whole lot of jobs though, and the town is kind of geographically isolated. (Although if you can get a job at UConn or ECSU, those are usually pretty good.)
As far as looking for affordable housing resources, you can try checking out any community action agency or community resource agency in your area. (In Willimantic we have the ACCESS Agency and Windham Regional Community Council).

Waterbury or New Britain but most likely wont be a safe area.
Rents in Waterbury and New Britain is $950 monthly for one bedroom the rent went up. The lowest you can find is $850 in the attic or tiny studio but on average it $950-$1075 for one bedroom.
Head a few states south or north unfortunately

For $800 to $1000 you can find something in Naugatuck. Town is okay depending on the area. I've lived there about 11 years now without much issue.
Norwich has some cheap rentals, but it’s not ideal for safety. There’s a lot of crime that’s usually drug related. I find that if I mind my business I’m pretty much left alone. As a single woman, I avoid going out when it’s dark, but I have a fire dept directly across the street from me which helps me feel safer since. I also moved into a place right next to a bar, and the bar owner looks out for me. He’ll take my bins to the curb and he cuts my grass. There’s a package store a few buildings down and the owner there keeps an eye out for me too, we had roadwork on my street and construction wanted me to park like two blocks away from my house and walk. The package store owner said I could use his parking lot and he’d walk me to my door. Most of us over here are just honest people that go to work, so I find that nobody is overly friendly, but we look out for one another. As long as you’re not involved in the drug stuff, roaming the streets at night, or flaunting valuables (which judging by what you can afford, you probably aren’t) I find that mostly everyone just keeps to themselves. I have a two bedroom for 795.
I’m a social worker and very knowledgeable about community resources so if you come to this area, message me on Reddit and I can point you in the right direction for energy assistance, renters rebate programs, food stamps and cash assistance programs, state medical insurance, soup kitchens, food pantries and a multitude of other programs for lower income people.
Vernon CT isn't bad at all. I'm in a 1 BR apt for $950/mo and heat's included.

I just went onto Zillow.com and searched in my area using the price filters. Several rentals came up, mostly in New London.
I also went on Craigslist and searched for a minute and found this apt near UCONN
Roommate wanted here in a listing on apartments.com.
I like to organize data, so my advice is to make a spreadsheet with different search options and results. Call them all and keep track of what the results are (left message, need to call back, already rented, etc.). You will find something if you are organized and persistent. But my advice is to first figure out where you want to live (proximity to job, family, school, etc) and start there. Otherwise you will be driving all over the state with no focus.

For that budget, look into a room sublet or splitting a spot with roommates. A 1 person 1br is expensive, but 4 people 4br may split out to cheaper in a lot of cases. Plus you can split utilities 4 ways too, split internet and even split food/netflix/etc.
