Yes, yes and probably not... DOT has had a shortage of drivers the past several years. They have added a number of double plow trucks over the years..

It's been awhile since we've had a winter season where we get snow like this every two weeks from November til March. Muscle Memory.

We haven’t paid gas tax in a long time. I’d be fine with the state saving money by not doing maintenance like plowing

I drove back roads to work at 5am, they had all been plowed. Still snow covered but fine. These were town roads mostly though, but the state road was also cleared.

84 was crap this morning. I was surprised at how bad it was, especially given that the storm wasn't all that bad. Made me realize how spoiled we usually are when it comes to road clean up.

Oh, there’s snow on the roads when it’s snowing. Interesting.

Can’t keep cutting wages for DOT employees and expect people to want the job. Especially with inflation what it is and the shortage of CDL drivers.

The state and many municipalities have set overtime maximums for road workers that plow and have to pay even more above that cap so they want to save those hours for truly catastrophic weather events. That's why the 2-10inch snow storms are treated lightly but above that it's rapid and constant.

I feel like the first real storm of the season is usually weird and has messy cleanup.

Some street plow drivers are also local contractors, not DOT employees. It’s a seasonal job that’s had no work this year, wouldn’t surprise me if that had something to do with it. Also, there really has been a nearly across the board reduction of the labor market. My town had a lot of people retire early during the quarantine. They replaced many, but they don’t have experience yet. Was talking to the city supervisor about it last year after they destroyed a bunch of ornamental shrubs by mistake.

The state has made it harder to get a CDL. If the state needed more drivers they could hire untrained workers willing to learn and qualify them for a CDL, but that would cost time and money so the state doesn’t do it. They could offer training for their non driver workers and pay raise if they get a CDL as well.

Yeah, idk what OP is talking about. Even side streets in Hartford at that time were passable this morning. Same with the highway. The only way they could have made it better is by dumping a ton of salt and sand on the ground.

Yeah, it was still actively snowing this morning when I work and for most the morning. They aren’t going to be perfect…

Underpaying workers & lack of drivers is just not accurate, they make VERY good wages & they have PLENTY of employees/drivers on sunny days to pick up trash on the highway or stop a lane of traffic to fill 3 potholes. The state trucks are huge and actually do a great job plowing our highways, I think the problem (with my own neighborhood too) is that towns outsource 3rd party randoms that do a very poor job and just don’t have the man power.

Depends where you are. State roads are usually cleared but some towns might only have 2 or 3 trucks and can't keep up.
